Known problems (and some solutions)
Windows QuickTime problems (no backgrounds or pictures are loaded) We have reports of problems related to the installation of the QuickTime extension which allows MycoKey to decompress the JPEG pictures. If a windows computer doesn't have QuickTime installed MycoKey will start the QuickTime installer on the CD during startup. In most cases you just run the QuickTime installer, and you are up and running. Problems seem to arise when QuickTime has been installed earlier in an old or incomplete version. If the computer is online with the Internet, QuickTime may by itself download the missing components. If you are disconnected QuickTime may run with the wrong components, and the pictures (including backgrounds) will not be loaded. First try reinserting the MycoKey CD while you are online with the Internet. If this doesn't do the trick, try to uninstall your present version of QuickTime. To do this choose »Uninstall QuickTime« from the »QuickTime« item in the »start programs« menu. When QuickTime asks you if you want to uninstall everything, say yes (you have a full QuickTime 5 installer on the CD). Then insert the MycoKey CD, and it should offer to install the full QuickTime from the CD. You can also solve the problem by downloading the MycoKey 1.1 update. This version can run without QuickTime.
Norton anti virus reports a suspect script If you are running Norton anti virus it may complain about the script \Mycokey\Mycokey.vbs. It seems that Norton anti virus doesn't like anything that starts by it self. Just ignore it!
An attempt to correct the sorting fails On some computers with non-latin alphabets (e.g. Chinese), MycoKey crashes after an attempt to sort its tables. For now, the only way to solve this is probably to install a western language version of the operating system.
When upgrading to version 1.1 the language choices disappears Language selection is in version 1.1 moved from the File » Preferences menu to the »Preference« pane in the MycoKey start window.
Macintosh System error on shutdown Unfortunately the latest update from 4th Dimension 6.8.3 to 6.8.4 introduced a system error on quitting MycoKey under OS 9. The error is benevolent (it does not bring down anything outside MycoKey) but is nevertheless annoying. Upgrade to OS X!
