The way it works

The MycoKey system is not only a network of internet pages - it´s a program.

Thus it has its own simple logic, that you have to learn.

MycoKey has two main parts, the search part and the result part. When you click the "log in" link below, you enter the search part.

In the search part, the program sends you through a series of internet pages, each showing the different characters you can enter - either by check boxes or pop-up menus.

To make the system work properly, check ONLY characters you are sure are positive. If in doubt, continue to other characters.

An example of a "search part" header

23 genera
   . ....

Each page in the search part concerns a certain subject e.g. cap morphology or ecology. When you have entered your answers on the present subject, you move on to the next (or previous) using the red arrows.

Each time you click the arrows - or any other button - the "counter" at the top will update, showing the number of genera matching your input.

At any time through your search, you can use the "flip" button to change to the result part. Here you will se the list of matching genera. Click on a genus name to load the pictures representing the genus. Use the flip button again if you want to return to the search part to enter more characters.

In the result part, many genera are represented by more than one example. You navigate through these examples (species) using the red arrows on each side of the picture or click the "large picture link" to pop a new window with a full size picture of the displayed species.

When you want to reset MycoKey and start a new search, click the "reset" button.

If you want to find a specific family or genus, use the "find" button to go to the find window.
