This outline of the basidiomycota is basically the families of J.H. Petersen 1995 ("Svamperiget") and H. Knudsen 1995 ("Taxonomy of the basidiomycetes in Nordic Macromycetes" - Symb. Bot. Ups XXX (3): 169-191) fitted into the tree of David S. Hibbett, Elizabeth M. Pine, Ewald Langer, Gitta Langer & Michael J. Donoghue ("Evolution of gilled mushrooms and puffballs inferred from ribosomal DNA sequences" - Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA, Vol. 94, pp. 12002-12006 (1997)).
The system of the Teliomycotina, Ustilagomycotina and Heterobasidiomycetes which are not included in Hibbet et al. is mainly based on "Jelly fungi, then and now!" (K. Wells 1994, Mycologia 86 : 18-48).
To construct this experimental arrangement, the taxa included in Hibbett et al. are placed in the families used by Knudsen or Petersen. These families are then placed into a system of higher taxa reflecting the branching pattern of the tree. Generally the other members of the families have had to follow the analyzed taxa. In the overview, the sequenced taxa are marked with a link to the tree (as Bjerkandera T) making it easy to se which taxa are the key taxa of the system.
A number of problems is connected to the used procedure. Firstly, the number of analyzed taxa is still low and we can not be certain, that other members of the families in Knudsens and Petersens systems actually belong together with the analyzed species. Secondly, a number of very large groups, e.g. the Tricholomatales, have no representatives in the tree, and are thus placed in their traditional position. Thirdly, it is impossible to rank the groups so that sistergroups are given the same rank, and the groups are thus placed in a rather subjective system of supraorders, orders and families.
I have chosen to avoid poly- and paraphyletic groups. This does, however, result in an number of monogeneric groups, e.g. the "Laxitextales". In some cases, I have renounced form assigning families/orders to such isolated, monogeneric taxons (e.g. Oxyporus) but have just placed the genus in approximately the correct position.
An experimental arrangement like this is (like all systems) guaranteed to get outdated rather fast. It is my intention to revise the arrangement whenever new trees emerge. Because of the fast evolution of the tree, it is meaningless to start describing new higher taxa at this point. I thus accept to use a number of taxa which are not validly published. These are put in quotation marks ("x").
I hope that this alternative system can provide inspiration to new studies in fungal phylogenetics. At least it may be helpful pinpointing where new sequences are needed the most.
