P.A. Saccardo was born in Italy, where he studied mycology. His major work is his "Sylloge Fungorum omnium hucusque cognitorum" (1882-1972), in which he listed names and descriptions of species and gener af fungi known at that time. He also created a system of spore groups by which he arranged the fungi.
