Christiaan H. Persoon was born in South Africa. He workes as a mycologist in Germany and Paris. His major interest was basidiomycete systematics, and his "Observationes mycologicae" (1795-1799), "Synopsis methodica Fungorum" (1801) and "Mycologica Europaea" (1822-1828) became the foundation of the system of later autors. Synopsis methodica Fungorum serves as sanctioning work for the rusts, smuths and "Gastromycetes".
