Elias Magnus Fries

1794-1878

 

E.M. Fries was born in Sweden. He studied in Lund, and later was employed as professor at Uppsala. In 1821 he published his "Systema Mycologicum" (vol. 1) - one of the central works in early mycology. Together with his "Elenchus Fungorum" and C.H. Persoons "Synopsis Methodica Fungorum" (1801), this work functioned as starting point for the fungi till the botanical congress in 1987, where the starting point was mowed to Linnes "Species Plantarum" from 1753.

Fries´ herbarium is in Uppsala.
