The sanctioning books by E.M. Fries
1794-1878

Systema Mycologicum vol. I-III was issued by E.M. Fries in 1821-32. It first functioned as starting point for the fungi. At a botanical congress in Berlin in 1987 its status was changed, and names included in Systema are now regarded as sanctioned towards earlier names. The same status is held by Fries' Elenchus Fungorum vol. I-II (1828) and Persoons Synopsis Methodica Fungorum (1801). The present startingpoint in fungal nomenclature is Linne (1753).
What is a sanctioned name?
That a name for a species or genus is sanctioned means that it must be used,
regardless of earlier validly published names. Thus the rule of priority
is suspended. See further details in International
Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN).
